Peterborough letter: Community came together to create George’s Cupboard

Sat., June 13, 2020timer1 min. read

It takes a community to repurpose a street library into George's Cupboard. And we've done it!

Some special thank you to friends in the community who worked with me on this retro project … without them, I assure you this would not have happened, or been as much fun!

Thank you to Jessica Gillett the owner of the former Hide-A-Way Restaurant, now Copper Spoons, on Romaine Street in Peterborough for the donation of the street library to be repaired and reused as George's Cupboard.

Lise, Rick, Claire, Sam and Fluffy Fines — thank you so much for your generous donation of children's books (French and English) and the tent pegs.

J. R MacLean, thank you for the donation of the shingles for the roof, even though we did not use them they have been donated for another project.

Pam Hart, for the great collection of novels and encouragement during the project process.

To Paul Winacott at Carved Wood Signs for the design of George's Cupboard sign.

An anonymous donation of funds to purchase the paint, and other miscellaneous items — thank you.

Gervais Vignola, for his constant encouragement and creative ideas from my constant talking about it to its conclusion.

And without the help of our friends and neighbours Brandon and Sophie for the fabrication of the metal roof, the door latch design, the use of the workshop and tools to repair the street library (it was in really rough shape), the new base and legs, the building of the sign bracket and the installation of the new sign, and the final placement engineering of the actual George's Cupboard!
